{"id":625,"date":"2010-03-16T23:38:36","date_gmt":"2010-03-17T03:38:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/amperzen.com\/blog\/?p=625"},"modified":"2010-03-16T23:38:36","modified_gmt":"2010-03-17T03:38:36","slug":"on-prejudice-and-preconceptions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/amperzen.com\/blog\/on-prejudice-and-preconceptions\/","title":{"rendered":"On prejudice and preconceptions&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I got a link to this video today from a friend.\u00a0 It&#8217;s on &#8220;The Future of Publishing&#8221;.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 If you&#8217;ve been seeing the recent bru-ha-ha about ebooks and their various readers and the pricing of ebooks for consumers, it&#8217;s possible to get the impression that books and reading are a thing of the past.\u00a0 Roll this belief in with the belief that young people\u00a0 don&#8217;t read, have short attention spans and don&#8217;t know anything about the world around them .\u00a0 This set of ideas and beliefs are what seem to be driving much of today&#8217;s marketing.<\/p>\n<p><object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"480\" height=\"290\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/Weq_sHxghcg&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1&amp;color1=0x3a3a3a&amp;color2=0x999999\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p>I enjoyed the video.\u00a0 Using the\u00a0 same message to express two totally opposite points of view is amazingly well done.\u00a0 It feed into the widely held beliefs and then turns them on their head.<\/p>\n<p>Publishing isn&#8217;t dead.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve got a Kindle and I love it.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve\u00a0 also got tons of\u00a0 traditional books. I say tons because in the last move we had more books in boxes to move than the total of all other items we moved from our apartment to our house.\u00a0 I love reading and can&#8217;t imagine a time when I won&#8217;t read.\u00a0 If my eyes fail me &#8212; I&#8217;ll get the Kindle to read to me with its Hawking&#8217;s voice (imagine having a great physicist read to you).<\/p>\n<p>What is most likely to kill publishing is the unwillingness of the industry to move forward.\u00a0 The world has changed.\u00a0 They way people live their lives has changed and they need to change with it.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll still read books on paper but the Kindle is what I take when I travel.\u00a0 As a computer programmer\/software analyst who has helped put together a book or two to be published &#8212; I know that an electronic books should not be priced more than a paperback.\u00a0 There&#8217;s a big difference between making a paper-book only and then using the same file to create an electronic version and not having storage and distribution issues.<\/p>\n<p>I had several books on my electronic wish list at Amazon until the pricing thing happened.\u00a0 Now those books are too expensive.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll buy them at a library sale or in a used books store.\u00a0 Electronic would have been nice but I&#8217;m not paying nearly hardcover sale prices for an electronic book.\u00a0 It&#8217;s the same reason I don&#8217;t buy DVD until they hit the below $10 sales (they should never cost more than $10 anyway).
